In order to upgrade to '94+ 10" rotors on a '90-'93 Miata, you need the caliper *bracket*, pads and rotors. (Note you don't need the calipers themselves!) Miq has a good write-up in the miata.net garage...check it too. |

Here's what the '94 rotors looked like when I got them! Ugh! |
59871 |
A wire wheel in a angle grinder made short work of all that rust! |
58269 |
A quick masking tape job and HIGH TEMP PAINT(1200 degree paint is preferred) is used to stave off more rust and clean things up a bit. |

It's best to leave your caliper's on the car, but mine are off in order to clean them up. |

The brackets need some clean up as well. The key to this job is to SWITCH SIDES OF THE CAR when putting on the brackets. That way you can use the '90-'93 calipers which need to pivot at the top bolt (more on this later). |

To retract the piston you use a clamp to press it back in to the housing. A C-clamp wil work as well. |

If you need to remove the piston to rebuild it (I didn't) you use compressed air to blow the piston out. I'd recommend putting a used brake pad in the way (not shown here) and keep those fingers CLEAR! |

Ahhh. A little wire brush work! |

Here I've cleaned up the brackets and the calipers at painted them. |

Removing the '91 caliper is easy. You don't have to even loosen the pivot bolt that the wrench is on here! |
56041 |
The top pivot bolt can stay on unless you are taking it all apart. The bottom one comes out. |
47044 |
Carefully set (or safety wire) the caliper out of the way. |
57879 |
The bolts holding the brackets have to come off. Remove the bracket and put the '94 bracket on. BUT use the bracket from the opposite side of the car. This is the passenger side, so it would use the '94 driver's side bracket. That way the pivot bolt for the caliper stays at the TOP. |

THIS is why you want to do the upgrade! ;-P |

The bigger rotors won't clear the marked parts of the shield. Just use some vise-grips and pry it back a bit to clear. Not much, just maybe 1/3" is all that's needed. |

If you remove the banjo bolt to take off the caliper (NOT necessary) make sure you have a container ready and don't get any fluid on your paint job! |
52498 |
To remove the other end of the hose (again, not necessary) you loosen the nut.... |
52228 |
and pull the tab out to release the hose. Uhh....fluid is going to come out!!!! Be ready. |

Once you have the brackets on...on the "wrong side" of the car ;-) ...put the bearing clips in place. |
67085 |
Put the pads on and ensure the springs are in place. |
48306 |
This is again the wrong '94 caliper, but all you do is lube up the slider pins with BRAKE (not general purpose) grease and put it back on! |

THIS is nice! I figure about 15%+ more swept area and 20%+ more rotor (for cooling). Much nicer than my '91s! Thanks to Scoots for selling me these for practically nothing! AND I have the rear ones coming.... ;-) Hey, sign the guestbook! Why? Cause I'd like to know whose coming and what you think...the site is just now crossing the 100,000 hit mark! 4/26/00 |
