Applicable to: '99-'05
2-way coaxial with 8" woofer and an aluminum tweeter that can be detached and mounted separately, making it a component system. Also includes a crossover box.
Perfect drop-in install if doing a Bosectomy. I mounted speakers as a coax unit using stock Bose speaker grill for stealth. I used the lightweight vinyl absorption pads from Parts Express and foam baffles.
Sound quality: good mid-fi, clarity better than Bose, bass has less overhang with more punch, volume can get very loud (speakers are driven by a Rockford Fosgate Punch 150), aluminum tweeter has very slight metallic sound but is not offensive but neither is it very extended on top, very good imaging from Bose woofer position. Impression: Memphis Audio seems to charge less than premium prices but approaches it, sound quality should be better, price/performance ratio is not too good. Looks good on paper, ears tell different story. Not bad speakers per se but I expected much more for the approximately $300/pr price.

Component speaker system that includes 2" tweeters, 8" woofers and 18db crossovers.
The installation was a breeze. The speakers fit perfect in the door. The only thing visible is the Punch 60ix amp. in the trunk. I used the factory CD/tape player and converted the speaker outputs to RCA connecters so the amp. could be used.
The sound in my Miata is now perfect, even with the top down. The best thing is that I have 8" woofers pumping out bass with no lose of trunk space (except for the amp.). If you need great sound in your Miata and dont want to give up space this is the only way to go. If you are not going to make adjustments on the amp., then it is possible to mount the amp. under the seat. I do strongly suggest an amp.
