G | 1990-92 MX-5 Miata | Battery Handling for Vehicles in Storage |
When a Miata is not drive for a long time (e.g. when the vehicle is left in winter storage) the battery may discharge. This is due to the fact that a small amount of current is supplied to the Engine Control Unit, radio, etc. at all times. A storage procedure has been developed to keep the battery from discharging.
When the vehicle is stored for a long period of time (over one month) the following storage procedure should be followed.
- Remove the negative battery terminal or remove the "ROOM" fuse in the fuse box.
- When the vehicle is to be used after being left unused for a long time, replace the negative battery terminal or "ROOM" fuse (removed in step 1). Next, operate the engine for 30 minutes at relatively high engine speed to charge the battery.
