S 1990-91 MX-5 Miata Damage to convertible top

Description

While loweing or raising the convertible top, the corner may contact the beltline protector, which may result in the corner of the top fabric becoming damaged or distorted. If you encounter this condition, install protective clips on both left and right sides in accorance with the installation procedure included in this bulletin.

Installation Procedure

1. Using an electric-powered drill, remove the rivets which fasten the end set plate of the top fabric.

Drill size: dia. 4mm. (0.16 in)

  
2. Remove the quarter trim, the cab side weatherstrip, the protector and the bolts which secure the top fabric bracket. Lift the top fabric bracket from the body.  
3. Remove weatherstrip No. 3.  
4. Remove the end set plate as follows:
  1. Peel up the seal tape to expose the screw.
  2. Remove the screw which fastens the end set plate.
  3. Remove the end set plate. Discard the removed plate.
  
5. Install the clip
  1. Place the clip with the hook positioned firmly on the top fabric.
  2. While holding the clip in place, install the tapping screw.
  
  1. Using a pair of pliers, crimp the clip hook as shown.
    Note:
    Apply tape to the pliers in order to prevent damage to the fabric.
  2. Fit the seal tape in place.
  
6. Install weatherstip No. 3. Insert the fastener as much as possible by hand. Use a mallet on the top end of the fastener to insert fully.

7. Install the top fabric using the bolt (M8). Reinstall the quarter tim, the cab side weatherstrip and the protector.

8. After installation is complete, check to see that the weatherstrip is matched with the door glass so that no water leakage will result. Check by applying water with a hose to the contact areas.
