Don't forget to loosen the lugs before jacking the car up, or you'll have to yell for your wife and ask her to stand on the brakes! ;-)

That's what it looks like after 9 years of daily use!
52165
Loosen the top caliper pin with a 17mm wrench. Mine needed some hammer coaxing. The lower pin needs to be pulled out.

This was going to just be a brake pad job, but then I got out the little wire brush!
51714
Cleaned up nicely in less than 5 minutes.

The caliper rotates upward (downward I think on a 94+), exposing the pads.
62173
Carefully remove the anti-rattle springs. (on a 94 I think it's hooked differently and looks more like an "M"). The pads then just slide out.

Well those clean caliper were going to show through my OEM alloys, so I thought I'd paint them black. (Gold looks good on black cars, red on red, but my silver likes black!)

Make sure you take the backing plate and squealer off the old pads.

Here is my new pad. You need a pad for your driving needs--road racing, autox, street, everyone needs something different. Check out the miataforum search for lots of discussion on the "best" pad for you.

You can't install the new pads till you retract the piston in the caliper. Remove the cap to your master cylinder. Watch the level.

A "C" clamp will work for this. Just go slow and don't pinch the seal when you push the piston back in. I'm not doing rears today, but DO NOT USE THIS METHOD ON THE REAR CALIPERS!!!!! There is an allen screw under a cap on the rears....

Hey, that looks good, but what is that ugly rust on the disk???
60968
Taped in less than 2 minutes and wire brushed with my "toothbrush".

Quick spray and wipe up any overspray with brake cleaner.

Put the pad bearing surface clips back in. I use a little caliper lube on the end of the pad where it'll touch in here.
31388
This is full synthetic high temperature brake caliper lube. DON'T use any thing but disk brake specific lube. Everything else will melt when the going gets tough (i.e. high heat)....just when you don't need trouble!

See the caliper? No? Good! See any rust? No? Good! That's what *I* wanted! ;-)
