Several registries are maintained for owners of these models.

UK Special Editions


1991 Special Edition

British Racing Green with tan leather interior, tan boot, and black top

Equipment: Nardi wood shift knob and hand brake handle, tan tonneau cover (some owners report having a black tonneau cover), stainless sill plates, air conditioning, compact disc player, limited slip differential, includes A and B package options: power steering, leather- wrapped steering wheel, aluminum alloy wheels, AM-FM/cassette stereo, cruise control, power windows, headrest speakers

Optional: hardtop, automatic transmission, ABS

Production: limited to 4000, numbered sequence with badge, all produced between 12-03-90 and 3-30-91. Note that Mazda described the model as a "Special Edition" although many would describe it as a "Limited Edition"

Base MSRP: $18,899 plus $299 + $35 freight, plus options

Brochures: There was a 4-page heavy paper color sales folder and a magazine ad for the 1991 BRG model.

1992 Black Miata

Black exterior, tan leather interior, tan boot, tan top "Black Miata" was special model designation

Equipment: power windows, and includes all A package options (power steering, leather-wrapped steering wheel, alloy wheels, AM-FM/cassette stereo)

Optional C Package (Black Miata only): Nardi wood shift knob and hand brake handle, stainless sill plates, BBS 14" alloy wheels, includes all other B package options (cruise control, headrest speakers, automatic antenna)

Optional: hardtop, automatic transmission, ABS, air conditioning, compact disc player, limited slip differential

Production: 4626, not limited. Became available around February 1992. The silver Miata was discontinued at around the time the Black and Yellow models were introduced

Base MSRP: $17,050 and $1,400 for C package, plus $350 freight, plus options

Brochures: The Black Miata was shown in the second 1992 sales catalog and also in a print ad. A revision of the print ad implied that the C package had later become standard equipment on the Black Miata

1992 Sunburst Yellow

Yellow was a $250 option and Mazda advertised that it used 3 coats of paint. This was not a special edition or special model in the U.S.

Equipment: All Yellows came with the A option package: power steering, leather-wrapped steering wheel, alloy wheels, AM-FM/cassette stereo. Yellow hardtop and automatic were  options. Most Yellows had premium floor mats with yellow logo, air conditioning, and limited slip differential

Production: 1519. Produced from December 1991 through April 1, 1992, with just 20 early models made in August 1991 147 were automatics and 519 had factory hardtops Sunburst Yellow is the rarest production color and was never used on any model except the Miata. A prototype 1991 Sunburst Yellow Miata with the B package is owned by Bonnie Lutz

Base MSRP: $16,420 plus $350 freight, plus options

Brochures: The Yellow Miata was shown in the second 1992 sales catalog and also in a print advertisement. A Canadian flier showed their Black SE and Sunburst Yellow LE

1993 Limited Edition

Black with red leather interior, red boot and tonneau cover, black top

Equipment: Nardi leather shift knob, 14" BBS alloy wheels, Mazda Sensory Sound System with CD player, stainless sill plates, Sport Suspension (includes Bilstein shocks, and revised springs), rear spoiler, front air dam, rear skirt, air conditioning, ABS, limited slip differential Included all A and B package options: power steering, leather-wrapped steering wheel, power mirrors, alloy wheels, cruise control, power windows, headrest speakers, automatic  antenna. Note that AM-FM/Cassette was made standard in all  Miatas beginning in 1993

Optional: hardtop, automatic transmission

Production: 1500, a numbered sequence

Base MSRP: $21,920 plus $350 freight, plus options

Brochures: The 1993 Limited Edition was never shown in a sales brochure or in a print ad in the U.S. It was mentioned on the specifications page of the second 1993 sales brochure. The Canadian model was shown in their 25th Anniversary brochure

1994 M Edition

Montego Blue Mica with tan leather interior, tan boot, and tan top

Equipment: Nardi wood shift knob and hand brake handle, polished alloy wheels with locks, air conditioning, stainless sill plates, custom mats, M Edition key ring/badge/lapel pin, Includes all A and B package options: power steering, leather- wrapped steering wheel, power mirrors, alloy wheels, Torsen limited slip differential, cruise control, power windows, headrest speakers, power antenna

Options: Hardtop, automatic transmission, ABS (standard with automatic transmission)

Production: 3000, described in the brochure as "special edition", and in magazine advertisement as "limited production"

Base MSRP: $21,250 plus $395 (later $425) freight, plus options

Brochures: There was no M Edition flier in 1994, although the model was shown in a magazine ad. It was mentioned on the specifications page of the second 1994 sales catalog

1994 R Package

The R package was a $1500 option package and not a special model

Equipment: Sport Suspension (Bilsteins shocks, heavy-duty rear springs, heavier sway bars), rear spoiler, front air dam, rear skirt, alloy wheels, Torsen limited slip differential The R was not available with power steering, automatic transmission or with A, B, C option packages

Optional: air conditioning, hardtop (dealer installed only)

Production: 1218

Base MSRP: $18,150 plus $395 freight, plus options

Brochures: The R Package was listed in the sales brochure. The Laguna Blue R package was shown in a magazine ad in 1994

1994 and 1995 Laguna Blue and Tan

Although not a special edition, many enthusiasts consider the Laguna with tan leather a special model

Equipment: This model with tan leather interior was a standard C package Miata (called Leather package in 1995)

Optional: air conditioning, hardtop, ABS, Premium Sound System, automatic transmission

Production: 341 in 1994 model year; 122 in 1995 before production ended early in the 1995 model year; total of 463. Altogether, 1797 Laguna Blue models were made in 1994, and 562 in 1995

Base MSRP: 1994 -- $19,760 with C package plus $395 freight, plus options
1995 -- $20,485 with Leather package plus $440 freight, plus options

Brochures: There was no Laguna Blue/Tan Leather pictured in a   Miata brochure or in a print advertisement

1995 M Edition

Merlot Mica (burgundy) with tan leather interior, low-back seats, tan boot and top

Equipment: Leather Nardi shift knob, 15" BBS wheels with high- performance tires, cut pile carpeting, stainless sill plates, air conditioning, CD player and 4 speakers, ABS, exterior badge, M Edition key ring/badge/lapel pin, M Edition floor mats, Popular Equipment Package (formerly called B package) included:
power steering, leather-wrapped steering wheel, power mirrors, alloy wheels, Torsen limited slip differential, cruise control, power windows, power antenna

Optional: hardtop, automatic transmission

Production: 3500 described in press release as "limited edition" and as "special M Edition", and in print ad as "rare production" According to press release, "to be produced for only six months" Launched at February 1995 Chicago Auto show

Base MSRP: $23,530 plus $450 freight, plus options

Brochures: There was a 2-sided color flier on the 1995 M Edition, and the M was featured in a magazine advertisement

1995 R Package

The R package was a $1500 option package and not a special model

Equipment: Sport Suspension (Bilstein shocks, heavy-duty rear springs, heavier sway bars), rear spoiler, front air dam, rear skirt, alloy wheels, Torsen limited slip differential The R package was not available with power steering, automatic transmission or Popular Equipment and Leather option packages

Optional: air conditioning, hardtop (dealer installed only)

Production: 465

Base MSRP: $19,000 plus $440 freight, plus options

1996 M Edition

Starlight Blue Mica with tan leather interior, tan boot and top

Equipment: Nardi wood shift knob, wood parking brake handle, 15" Enkei 5-spoke wheels with high-performance tires, M Edition floor mats, blue Miata logo on seatbacks, stainless sill plates, ABS, air conditioning, Premium Sound System with CD player, door-mounted tweeters, and headrest speakers, M edition logo on tachometer, exterior M Edition badge, M Edition key fob/badge/lapel pin, custom floor mats, security system and remote entry

Standard Popular Equipment Package, which included:
power steering, leather-wrapped steering wheel, power mirrors, alloy wheels, Torsen limited slip differential, rear subframe brace, cruise control, power windows, power antenna

Optional: hardtop, automatic transmission

Production: 2968, described in flier as "limited-edition"

Base MSRP: $24,760 plus $450 freight, plus options

Brochures: There was a 2-sided color flier on the 1996 M Edition

1996 R Package

The R package was a $1500 option package and not a special model

Equipment: Sport Suspension (Bilsteins shocks, heavy-duty rear springs, heavier sway bars), rear spoiler, front air dam, rear skirt, alloy wheels, Torsen limited slip differential The R package was not available with power steering, automatic transmission or Popular Equipment and Leather option packages

Equipment: Nardi wood shift knob, wood parking brake handle, 15" polished 6-spoke alloy wheels with high-performance tires, cut pile carpeting, stainless sill plates, air conditioning, Premium Sound System with CD player and headrest speakers, exterior badge, M Edition logo on seatbacks and tachometer, M Edition pen/key fob/lapel pin, custom floor mats, Included Popular Equipment Package with: power steering, leather-wrapped steering wheel, power mirrors, Torsen limited slip differential, cruise control, power windows, power antenna, rear subframe brace

Optional: hardtop, automatic transmission, ABS

Production: 3000, produced from December through February Launched at February 1997 Chicago Auto Show Described in sales flier as "limited edition"

Base MSRP: $24,485 plus $450 freight, plus options

Brochures: There was a 2-sided color flier on the 1997 M Edition, and the M was featured in a magazine advertisement

1997 R Package

The R package was a $1500 option package and not a special model

Equipment: Sport Suspension (Bilstein shocks, heavy-duty rear springs, heavier sway bars), rear spoiler, front air dam, rear skirt, alloy wheels, Torsen limited slip differential The R package was not available with power steering, automatic transmission or Popular Equipment and Leather option packages

1997 STO Edition

Twilight Blue Mica with tan leather interior, tan boot and tan top "Special Touring Option" called "still the one" in advertising

Equipment: Leather Nardi shift knob, 15" Enkei 5-spoke wheels with Bridgestone high-performance tires, stainless sill plates, rear lip-type spoiler, rear subframe brace, CD player with headrest speakers, custom floor mats with STO label, power steering, leather-wrapped steering wheel, power mirrors, power windows, Certificate of Authenticity, numbered STO dash plate

Optional: automatic transmission, air conditioning

The following were not available from the factory on the STO:
cruise control, ABS, Torsen LSD, Premium Sound System, electric antenna, factory hardtop

Production: 1500 in numbered sequence, produced May-July 1997, available beginning of July

Base MSRP: $22,520 plus$450 freight, plus options

Brochures: There was a 2-sided color flier on the 1997 STO Edition, and the STO was featured in a magazine advertisement

1990 Miata "Color Cars"

There were six Miata "color cars" produced in late 1990. The experimental colors used were:

On the window sticker, in the block "Color of Your New Mazda", it said "Various Test Colors". All cars had an "X" for the color code

Equipment: Three A Packages and three B packages

Production: One of each of six cars. These six cars were removed from the assembly line and painted at the factory. The cars were painted completely and the color was under the hood, inside the trunk and under the carpets. They were not painted some other color first and then repainted. They were returned to the assembly line for completion and then shipped to the Mazda design studio in Irvine, California

Base MSRP: The sticker for the orange car, owned for a time by Skip Cannon, was $15,999 for an A package with air conditioning

1991 Sunburst Yellow B Package "Color Car"

A prototype 1991 Sunburst Yellow Miata with the B package is owned by Bonnie Lutz. It had been used in advertising by Mazda at Irvine, California
